Prime giving set. Perform venipuncture and connect the administration set immediately. Adjust the infusion rate if necessary. Delivery takes place via a closed circuit, requires no air supply. Maintenance therapy should replace the normal losses that occur with urine, stools, respiratory tract and skin. Maintenance therapy usually requires 50 ml/kg body weight/day. Persistent losses during the disease period should be estimated where possible, ie the amount of vomiting, diarrhea or blood loss. It can be used to treat dehydration; restore electrolyte and acid-base balance or meet fluid and electrolyte maintenance requirements in non-drinking animals.

The goal should be to correct about half of the calculated deficit in the first 1-2 hours.
