HY-50 Vet 17mg/ml Solution is a highly purified, sterile, pyrogen-free aqueous solution of sodium hyaluronate derived from a fermentation process with Streptococcus spp. and then purified to give a product that is substantially free of proteins and nucleic acids. Each ml contains: sodium hyaluronate 17 mg; sodium chloride 7.57 mg; disodium hydrogen phosphate 3.78 mg; monobasic sodium phosphate 0.45 mg; and water for injection
HY-50 Vet 17mg/ml Solution is a sodium salt of hyaluronic acid, a highly polymerized unsulfated mucopolysaccharide acid or a glycosaminoglycan composed of an equimolar amount of D-glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine linked by glycosidic linkages. Hyaluronate has a negative charge that facilitates binding to other substances such as water, ions, proteins, and solutes. Hyaluronate produced by bacteria is structurally and chemically indistinguishable from mammalian hyaluronate. In cases of severe acute lameness, radiographic evaluation should be carried out prior to intra-articular or intravenous HY-50 treatment to ensure that the joints are free from serious fractures. Observe strict aseptic technique. Intra-articular injections should not be made through the skin that has been recently fired or blistered, or that has been scuffed by the use of counterirritants. The safety of HY-50 has not been established in breeding animals or in pregnant or lactating mares.
Hyaluronate is a naturally occurring substance present in connective tissue, skin, vitreous humor, articular fluid and umbilical cord in all mammals. Hyaluronate is synthesized by synoviocytes and is responsible for the viscoelastic property of the synovial fluid. Synovial fluid hyaluronate acts as a lubricant for intra-articular soft tissues and assists in providing nutrition and removal of waste products from vascular cartilage and is an important part of the synovial membrane barrier. The surface of the articular cartilage is covered with a thin amorphous layer of the protein-hyaluronate complex. Hyaluronate is also found in the surface layers of the cartilage matrix, where it resists cartilage compression while maintaining plasticity. Hyaluronate has biochemical activities that differ from its physical properties.
